AI baiting
I was just reading someone's post about how hard it is to use some web sites these days due to the anti-bot restrictions. I had to agree; I've turned away from many a site because of the ridiculous hoops they want you to jump through. Indeed, even one of the local grocery sites has to "verify that you are human" before continuing. Really? What is a bot going to gain from looking at your sale flyer?
You may have noticed this problem too, and perhaps also the fact the AI-driven search engines have no trouble parsing the sites and adding them to their results lists. Then you click on the link and lo and behold, you can't actually see even the summary from the list. Nope; you must play "Captcha" and tell them how many of the pictures that don't have three stones in them have three stones in them. I can count, can you?
So in the end the efforts employed to keep out the AI bots don't keep them out, as they have no trouble running the gamut of permutations to prove they aren't what they are. But the actual users you want coming to your site? They get frustrated, give up, and go away.
If the search engines were not themselves a manifestation of the evil that is AI they could report things like "can not be accessed without agreeing to terms" or some such so that people could skip any site that is too frustrating to deal with instead of having to find it out the hard way.
