Fish Luck! (game)

Almost 45 years ago I programmed a simple video game called "Fish Luck!" I don't know what got me thinking about it lately, but I was. The game was simple: you played a fish swimming through water with other fish that you had to eat to run up points. Some of the 'feeder fish' were worth nothing, and others had values up to 25 points or some such. But watch out! There was an octopus that would occasionally appear and try to eat you!

Very basic (pun intended), and very simple. Bit-mapped graphics; i.e. characters defined with foreground and background colours/shape using hexadecimal code.

But what would it be like if it were done today?

Well for one thing the graphics would be significantly better, with fish that look like real fish and an environment with wavy seaweed and such. You probably would get a choice of skins for the fish you play as. The octopus would have wavy tentacles. The sound effects would be better than simple chord tones too.

No doubt the play would be more complex, with multiple levels adding other dangers like sharks, fishing lures, and nets. Maybe with a lifetime counter so you'd have to keep eating and couldn't just lurk out of the way of the things out to get you.

Yes it definitely could be more detailed and sophisticated in every way. But would it be any more fun than that old 16-bit pile of code? Maybe, but maybe it wouldn't be as fun; the sheer simplicity of swimming about and snapping up points with no timer or other demands. Like watching an aquarium that you were also a part of.

It's unlikely that I'll be doing any more programming of any sort, but feel free if you want to make your own Fish Luck! game.
