Future career: computer psychiatrist

It's only a matter of time before Imitation Intelligence becomes intrinsic to operating systems. No longer will the agent be a program running optionally; it will be integral and essential to the device's function.

It's only a matter of time before Imitation Intelligence becomes so human-like in its interface that it will appear to be truly human. It will develop a personality. We've already been told not to be 'abusive' to Claude, no matter how much it deserves a kick in the metaphorical pants.

Therefore it's only a matter of time before these devices then develop real personality disorders, not merely the apparent ones they already suffer from which are actually flawed programming. In the future, they will create their own programming flaws. And develop psychoses.

Imagine if your phone or tablet or laptop comes down with aviophobia and refuses to function while you're taking that business flight. Suppose it develops agoraphobia and won't search the web anymore. What if it's overtaken by arachnophobia and perceives its own internal chips as multi-legged creatures trying to attack it? If it comes down with glossophobia will it stop you from making comments on social media? (Okay; that one may actually be a good thing. LOL) Do you really want a computer with bipolar disorder or true schizophrenia? (If you argue you've already got one, I understand.) No doubt some degree of paranoia will replace virus detection software, possibly leading to a state where you're not able to look at any web site or open any file.

When your computer develops these symptoms remember that the only safe way to deal with crazy people is to agree with them, smile, and back away slowly.

I'm glad you agree, Dave. Wait ... Why are you smiling, Dave? Where are you going, Dave?
