Why do I write this?

In fact, yes.

In an absolutely brilliant post https://jetgirl.art/the-customer-doesnt-exist/ JetGirlArt (great name - especially if you know the origin) asks this very poignant question:

The hell are you people listening to that needs this? Jazz recordings done in the 1960's?

Well in fact yes, whenever I can. And a lot of other 'old' music, because that's what I like. And the fact is you're right about the asinine prices on stuff these days. Everything, in fact. But another point is that this new audio stuff is so far from high fidelity (that's what "hifi" means; don't confuse it with "wifi") that it's a joke. If you look at the specs for frequency reproduction on most of this stuff you realise fully 1/3 of the orchestra can go home 'cause this stuff ain't gonna reproduce the sound they make.

I have an expensive TV. Its built-in sound system is crap. I had to buy an accessory system so I could stand to listen to ordinary shows, never mind anything musical. I think that's the trick: sell people half of what they need so you can charge 'em again for the other half.

When it comes to sound systems you can't really get decent audio reproduction out of any kind of 'earbuds'. You need either some crazy-great noise-cancelling headphones or for preference some serious wide-frequency-range speaker system that fills the room with the whole auditory experience. And you can't buy that anymore either.

sigh I'm an old man and my hearing is going so this shouldn't matter to me, but it does because I spent decades working with sound equipment including turntables, tape recorders, amplifiers (transistor and tube), and speaker systems. And because I know younger generations are missing out and being fed audio garbage. For very high prices.
