Promises, promises.
It's post-election time here where I live, and all the newly-elected officials are continuing their campaigns of promises. After all, you've got to reassure the public they've made the right choice! So they roll out more hyperbole and carefully crafted statements that say nothing of real substance, as usual. But what are we in for?
Change!
Because they said so.
Now let's examine what that means when stripped of all the prevarication.
Suppose the 'problem' is that it's "too hot". Every candidate promises to do something about it. You can immediately dismiss the incumbent because they haven't yet and this problem didn't suddenly appear at election time. So what possible options do the others have to offer?
One thing they could do is make effective policy against the climate change currently turning the planet into a giant crock pot. Since that would require co-operation from everyone else in the world, it wouldn't matter what laws are enacted locally.
Another thing they might do would be offer programs making it easier to obtain air conditioners so that at least people could get some relief from the heat. (The flaw here is that A/C units contribute to global warming merely by operating, never mind the effects of building and disposing of them.)
But there's a couple of other possible 'solutions' the newly-elected may implement that you probably never suspected might be on the list of options.
They can make it even hotter. After all, they promised "change" not "improvement".
Or they can make it illegal to complain about how hot it is. Once again, it's "change" as promised.
Listen with a jaded ear, and don't expect miracles.
