Spell check is more like spell heck
What's in a name?
Apparently random meaning, according to the spell checker in the program I have to use. Now I don't expect it to catch when I write a wrong word; that's for the 'grammar check' - and the proof-reader. But words that are misspelled ... it has a problem with some of them.
Specifically proper names. It is inconsistent with them, which is a terrible problem. Even within a single paragraph it can mark a name as being misspelled one time, and not another. Same word, same letters, different results.
A long time ago when this technology was in its infancy a spell checker would highlight any and all unrecognised words and bring them to your attention. Then you could say 'yes' and add it to the 'dictionary' or 'no' and correct the spelling - and then add it. So if the Name was 'Rebbekka' it would come up as 'wrong' until you said it was 'right'. If it was supposed to be 'Rebekka' or 'Rebecca' you told it so. And you could do it 'one time' or always. You the writer had the control. Names are not always standard English and allowance for variations is necessary. (In this example the spell check here only recognises the last version as correct.)
Maybe everyone should be called "John Smith" - it could probably handle that.
There's no substitute for a good human brain.
