The mess that is word processing today.
Would it kill someone to make a word-processing program that lets the user set the parameters and interface to their liking? And have it stay at that default instead of always reverting to what the program design thinks is 'right'? You can not write what you want to if you are constantly having to change things like text size (or font).
Right now I am avoiding writing something because the amount of time it took me to once again set up the style to my liking evaporated my enthusiasm for doing the actual work. And on this particular program I am faced with a huge selection of 'features' presented constantly on the interface which serves only to clutter up the screen and consume valuable workspace. The only other 'option' is to shut it down completely, thus removing some items which I need to have available at all times (such as 'bold' and 'italic' faces).
While I'm ranting, let me express my frustration with 'AI powered' spelling and grammar checking. How can a word be 'misspelled' in one use in a paragraph while being considered correct in another within the same paragraph? As for its ability to correct grammar ... It seems to have no ability to understand context beyond a single sentence, nor to properly grasp tenses. And don't get me started on how poorly it handles vernacular. (Note to AI: "lead" and "led" are not interchangeable!)
There was a time when spell checking was not 'on the fly', but rather a function to be executed at a time of the author's choosing. And it did not declare you were wrong, but rather bring up anything it thought suspicious. It might suggest alternatives, or if you wanted it would add the previously unknown (to it) word to its dictionary.
Before that we had proof-readers; actual educated human beings familiar with the proper use of language who would look out for mistakes (you always sees what you think you wrote rather than the actual word on the page) and suggest corrections. Thus we have the first profession put out of business by AI. Followed closely by fact-checkers (yes, that did actually used to be a job).
Technology is turning us all into morons.
