Things I hate about Google Docs
Okay, let's go for the easy and obvious answer first: everything.
That was the joke, now let's be more specific.\
First of all, this post was triggered when I started the program on my Chromebook and it immediately threw up a banner trying to entice me to use their Gemini AI. Hey, you know what "AI" stands for? "Ass Insert". No, I will not apologise for that.\
So let's look at the start-up of GD: A mostly empty screen that wants me to start a new document. It displays "Start a new document" and a big rectangle with a multi-colour '+' in it. Where are all the documents I've already started? Scroll down to find the list. Every other program has a menu that include "new" along with "open" in the same, two-line space: not half the screen given over to a mostly blank display.\
Next, we open up an existing document. Okay, start at the beginning. That's normal. What isn't normal is that when you leave it a bit and the screen blanks you have to start at the beginning again, instead of where you left off. Let's 'Find" where we were with ... oh, no; there doesn't seem to be any way to do that. Scroll & search, stick the cursor in so it all doesn't accidentally page back to the beginning. Try again. Oh you can use the magnifier and arrow keys to page up/down - which you have to because this dumb Chromebook doesn't have PgUp/Dn keys. That magnifier key gets in the way a lot, and like so many other useless functions gets accidentally triggered. Positive keying input? Nah, that stuff went out decades ago.
Oh and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how long it takes to 'repopulate' a mere 45 page document. You've got time to whistle a tune before the whole work shows up.\
But hell, the interface itself is lousy: lots of symbols I've yet to ever click on which lead to secondary or even tertiary functions while things you really want are buried. Have they never written so much as a grade-school English essay? The big problem is that you cannot customise it to suit your needs! And who starts out using 11 point typeface? Seriously? I've set type by hand and don't think there really even is such a thing in the printing world!\
The main point here is that the program (app) is frustrating to use because it's not intuitive or sensible and you can't set your own standards for using it: they force you to use it their way, and you will be a poorer writer because of that.
I've looked at other WP apps for the Chromebook*, and they aren't promising either. Especially not the "in app ads" that seem to be included in every description. If only this thing would run Linux like it's supposed to, but it can't really.\
Just one more piece of disappointing modern technology.
*I also call it a "Crimebook" or a "Crumbbook". I am not impressed by them. Nor any of the other 'computer' offerings available these days.
